Dire Dawa

Dire Dawa is the town our sweet girl is from. We flew there the day before we left and I am really glad we decided to go see it before heading home. We took a little blue three-wheeled motorized taxi around the city to see some sights. The first thing we did was go to the hospital where Zaidee was born. It was heartbreaking. Walking in my stomach just dropped. The conditions were terrible and filthy. People were everywhere crying out for care. It was like walking through a movie. To add to it, the city of Dire Dawa is extremely hot because it is much lower elevation than Addis. It is hard to describe just how sad the conditions were, and unfortunately I wasn't allowed to take pics. I had thought that Addis was pretty impoverished, but Dire Dawa was even worse.

We also got to go to the orphanage where Zaidee was first cared for. The workers there were so sweet and took great care of us. We spent the afternoon seeing the orphanage, playing and singing songs with all the cute kids there, and holding and kissing all the sweet babies. Before we left, the workers prepared a huge meal for us. Rolls, injera, popcorn, cookies, 3 types of meat, beets and potatoes, lentils, rice, coffee, coke, and a barley drink. It was great!

Overall it was a great experience to see the place where little Zaidee's life began. I am glad I will be able to tell her all about it when she is older.
This is the baby room at the orphanage where Zaidee first lived.
This is a fermented barley drink that I was served a few times. It reminds me of my grandmas homemade root beer. And below are some not very sweet cookies.
Here are the sweet nannies that cared for Zaidee first.
The market, in the afternoon everyone lays around and chews khat a few people asked us to join them ;)
